St. John's Lutheran Church
Saved by Grace - Led by the Spirit - Called to Serve
Our History
St John's Lutheran Church was
organized on February 7, 1896, and
was known as the Danish
Evangelical Lutheran Church of
Oregon.  The white framed
building on Washington Street cost
$2000 and was dedicated on May 1,
1898.  In 1934, the name was
changed to St. John's Lutheran
Church but services continued to
be in Danish until 1936.
In 1883 the Danish
Evangelical Lutheran
Church of Rutland was built.
The church shown here after
it was lifted off its foundation
to add a basement.
The need for a larger
building was recognized
in June 1941, and in June
1949 it was decided to
build a new church on the
old site and use the
furnishings of the old
church wherever possible.
 Services were held in the
Oregon Community
Building for the next two
years, and many fund
raising projects were
undertaken.  The brick
church was dedicated on
October 19, 1952.

In 1975, plans were made to build a new
church building and education unit on
the five acre East Netherwood property.
The need for Sunday school space was the
highest priority so the education unit
was built first.  It was dedicated on
February 20, 1976.  During the next five
years, the Sunday school children and
staff were bussed to the new building
while worship services continued to be
held at the Washington Street church.
Classes were also held in the Holy Mother
of Consolation education building.
Construction began on the new church
sanctuary on October 11, 1981, after the
Faith Lutheran congregation purchased the
Washington Street building.  Worship
services were held in the education unit
along with the Sunday school for the next
six months.  The beautiful new worship area
was dedicated on May 23, 1982.

Additional lots were purchased in 2000 to allow for future
expansion and parking.  The building for Christ campaign was
started and construction began January 2002.  We began building
a new multi purpose room, class rooms, remodel the office area and
kitchen.  The new addition was dedicated in September 2002.
